E ora chiamatemi dottore! And now call me doctor!

Ladies and gentlemen, you can now call me a doctor! On the 17-11-2007 I have successfully defended my dissertation at the public examination held at the main building of University of Helsinki. On the other hand, due to some protocol regulations, I cannot call myself doctor until the faculty officially says so. Funny, isn't it? :)
I thank the opponent, the custos, Kimmo, Jukka, those who participated to the (lengthy) public defense, to the karonkka and all those who made it possible for me to reach this important goal. Now I just need to figure it out what to do with this yet another piece of paper...

Notizie che non vorremmo mai leggere - News we never would like to read

No comment. Condoglianze ai parenti delle vittime.

Corriere - Repubblica - La Stampa - TGCom

No comments. Just condolences to the relatives of the victims.

Helsingin Sanomat - Yle - FinlandForThought coverage of the fact with the hallucinating Youtube profile of the shooter.

MEI COGLIONI (sorry for my French) mi viene da dire. In ogni caso, toglietela.

Besides the car tax, the Finnish government has approved also a law that makes inheritance tax lighter. Some details on this finnish article. The minimum treshold after which a tax is collected is raised, according to the new law, from 3400 to 20000€. WHAT A GAIN!!!! All Finland will be grateful for such a massive increase. After 60000€, and for direct succession (spouse), the tax is of 16%. So, if one inherits a house (pretty normal sitaution) of value, say, 200000€, he'll have to pay 32000€!!! What a lame tax. Why??? Indeed, the article also talks of some deductions, but I have not quite understood how they apply, nor I want to do it now, I'm too young to even think of it. :) But if somebody knows, please post a comment!

The scariest part here is that I remember (unfortunately I have no reference) Matti Vanhanen, or another government/parliament representative, saying that with this threshold raise, the 80% of Finnish families will be relieved from paying this tax. WHAT??? Only 20% of deceased leave a house in inheritance in Finland? How in heart is that possible? Again, I call for more details from those who know more.

Autovero

Persino in Estonia girano macchine piu' nuove!

Let's pass now to a better news. Finnish government has approved the budget for year 2008. Among the laws approved, they managed to reduce the ill-famed car tax, which so far has placed an additional average 30% price (!) on top of the price of every new car (and thus, for the transitive property, used ones as well) in Finland. For example, for a small Fiat Punto, you can pay as much as 16000€, about 4000€ than in Italy. If you move over better cars, like BMW, the difference can sum up to 15000€ (!) compared to other more "civil" nations. This tax has had the effect that Finland has the oldest cars in Europe. And thus, the least safe, and the most polluting ones. There's an official analysis about this, I can't find it now. Believe me. And if you don't, just come and take a look in Santa's land. Even in the poor neighbour Estonia there are better and newer cars...

Anyway, now they have brought the level of this tax to a value variable between 10 and 40%, depending on the emission level of the cars. The result is that most of the new cars will cost less than they currently do starting in 2008, as this interesting table shows. The same Fiat Punto would now cost about 1500€ less, while bigger cars decrease in the average too (don't buy a SUV!). This is a very good law, which punishes the big polluting cars. Still, the price is going to be higher than the average in Europe, as there's still an additional of at least 10%, but better than nothing. Sure enough, current car owners have now seen the value of their cars decreased all of a sudden, but you cannot have everything in the life, can you?

Verosirkus

Recently, two important happenings occurred in the Finnish political and social life, and I'll summarize them for you, in the next posts.

Punctual like a swiss watch, the Finnish tax administration has published the detailed income information for the year 2006 of the Finnish citizens (and also of the non-Finns who have the misfortune to live in Finland and earn a salary here and undergo such a violation to their rights to the privacy. Read a previous post of mine some time ago.). Immediately, wasting no time, a Finnish tabloid has published online a list with ALL the Finnish municipalities and the names of each person together with the income for year 2006. They even made it in order to check who's earned more... Luckily, they had the decency to publish only the income of those who earned more than 150000€ in 2006. I don't know if I should be happy or not that I am not in such a list... I can't understand the reasons for such a violation to an individual's privacy. Maybe some day one will care to explain me. Note that you are denied the right to object, that is, you cannot prohibit that your information is made public, nor you are ever asked for permission that your data are published online. All in name of freedom of press (!). The interested readers can refer to Verosirkus (the tax circus), where the history behind this shame is told, the list of all the european laws that Finland is happily infringing is published, and there's even a template to use to file a formal complaint to the EU hoping that they force Finland to stop this circus.
